Humans, horses, pets go caroling in Alamo

Oakland Tribune,  Dec 24, 2007  by Jennifer Gokhman       ALAMO -- Horses, miniature horses and several dogs walked down the narrow and winding roads of Alamo Oaks, people leading them along the way and singing Christmas carols to their neighbors Sunday afternoon.   The caravan was led by a pickup truck, complete with children singing loudly in the back and loudspeakers attached.

People in this Alamo neighborhood have gone caroling together since about 1999, said Jane VanderWerf, who organizes the event. Almost everyone in the neighborhood has larger animals because each has at least an acre of land, she added.

"There are horse people and animal lovers of all types," she said. "We're walking with friends, and it's fun. It gives us a chance to get in the spirit."  Between 30 and 40 people join in caroling, either riding horses or walking dogs, or just strolling along.

As the group went through the neighborhood, onlookers stopped to watch and take pictures, and some people stopped their cars to listen.

The Alamo Oaks homeowners association has several get-togethers throughout the year, including a Memorial Day parade and a Halloween party.

"We know our neighbors here because we make an effort to get out," VanderWerf said.

One of the carolers, Sherry Day, who brought her children and three miniature horses, agreed.

"There are not too many neighborhoods like this anymore," she said.

Dani Hall and Kylie Day, both 15, wore Santa caps as they walked the miniature horses.

"It's sweet," Dani said about the caroling.

Kylie agreed: "It's nice to bring cheer to the neighborhood." Gayle Jones, riding her white and gray horse Smokey Jones, said she and her horse look forward to caroling every year.

"It's become tradition," she said.

She called her friends so they would come out of their house to see the carolers.

After caroling, John and Jennifer Linden host a party at their home, and Santa Claus makes an appearance as well.

John Linden sets up his train sets for the neighborhood children to enjoy.

"I like neighborhood events," he said. "It's a way to get to know neighbors and have some fun.
